Ranked as one the most important events of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe, the festival will feature the complete ‘line-up’ of Hungarian Dixieland musicians and recognized bands and soloists from Europe and overseas.
The idea behind this event was to make it a unique global Bartók festival. Celebrated stars from La Scala, the Metropolitan, Covent Garden and the Bolshoy will also appear on stage. www.operafesztival.hu
The series of events starts off with a masquerade followed by a show by martial arts teams, entertainment for children with people on stilts and puppeteers with giant puppets, and the re-creation of Turkish times at the fortress on the day designated to Oriental culture.
Hollókő is a perfectly preserved village in north east Hungary that is a UNESCO World Heritage site on account of the vernecular architecture and fabulous folk costumes and traditions. Every Easter the whole village dresses in traditional costume and there is lots of music making and dancing. www.holloko.hu
Eger is a much loved destination for many British visitors: in December it drapes itself in Christmas lights, the main square has a Christmas market and between Christmas and the New Year it celebrates the famous wines grown in the vicinity
The core of these cultural events is the series of classical and pop concerts in Baradla Cave, famed for its acoustics and stunning limestone "scenery", but traditionalist programmes, fairs and village days await visitors too.
