Hiking
Hiking is an excellent way of exploring the landscape beyond the shoreline. The region to the north of Balaton – much of which falls within the Balaton Uplands National Park – is cherished with particular fondness by those who want to don their walking shoes, leave the crowds behind and get back to nature. The volcanic hills contain fascinating rock formations, provide a home for a rich spread of wildlife species and offer wonderful views over the lake. There is a network of marked trails to follow; you might consider climbing up to the plateau of Badacsony Hill, wandering around the ancient geyser cones at Tihany or moving further north to the wooded Bakony range.
The Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate (www.bfnpi.hu) – whose office is in Veszprém – should be able to provide you with a map of the park showing the walking trails and viewing points. Alternatively, you could contact the Hungarian Ramblers’ Association (www.fsz.bme.hu/mtsz/bemutata.htm). Ecotours (www.ecotours.hu) is a respected company that arranges hiking holidays.
