Nagyvázsony
Nagyvázsony
Nagyvázsony – set several kilometres back from the northern side of the lake – is famous for its castle. Originally constructed in the 14th century, it was enlarged during the reign of the great Renaissance king, Matthias. The contemporary commander was a man of legendary strength; it is said that he once performed a victory jig while bearing the body of a slain Turkish soldier in each hand! You can see pieces of his red-marble sarcophagus in the castle’s chapel, while the dungeons hold a grisly torture museum and the barbican affords splendid views across the surrounding countryside. If you are here in the summer, be sure to catch a concert or a thrilling display of medieval jousting.
