Balatonfüred
Balatonfüred
Balatonfüred, on the northern shore, is a noble resort that came to prominence in the early 1700s when a spa was established harnessing the health-giving properties of its sulphurous springs. In the 19th century it was the favourite retreat of the age’s leading poets, artists and politicians, and it continues to carry an elegant air. Its lakeside promenade is lined with acacias, and takes you past fishermen sitting on rocky outcrops and a park filled with lime trees planted by famous figures of the past.
Pay a visit to the Round Church, which was modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, or to the Jókai Memorial Museum, former villa of one of the country’s leading Romantic writers. Alternatively you can sunbathe or enjoy watersports at one of three public beaches. There is good hiking to be had in the wooded hills and valleys above the town, and wonderful views from the Jókai Lookout Tower. Here too you’ll find the Lóczy Cave – the largest in the Balaton Uplands, and full of intriguing limestone formations.
The most eagerly anticipated social event is the Anna Ball (on 26 July, or the closest weekend), which has been held annually since 1825, and features dancing and the election of a queen and courtiers (who are driven through the streets in a regal carriage). The town is also at the heart of the Balatonfüred-Csopak wine region, and August and September see thriving festivals when the leading vintners set up stalls along the promenade and offer their wares to thirsty tasters.
