Food

Feeling hungry? Well you’ll find no shortage of spots to fill your face, from open-fronted eateries by the beach to traditional inns nestled in the hills. Unsurprisingly, fish features heavily on the menu. The white, flaky meat of the pike-perch (fogas) – found only in Lake Balaton – is a particular favourite; it is usually fried and served whole. Fish soup is another classic dish. It is packed with many types of fish, although the carp and catfish are said to add the clinching flavour.

Other local specialities are cooked from deer and wild boar hunted in the forests of the hills near Keszthely and Veszprém, and from game birds that live among the region’s meadows. And of course every self-respecting restaurant has a bubbling cauldron of the country’s famous, paprika-rich goulash (gulyás) among its offerings! Alternatively you can choose from a wide selection of international restaurants serving everything from pizzas, pastas and steaks to Chinese, Thai and German. There’s something to satisfy the fussiest of eaters and the biggest of appetites!
