Herend

The diminutive Herend, 15km west of Veszprém, certainly punches well above its weight. After all, how many other Hungarian villages can claim to have attracted the attention of Queen Victoria herself? Since the 19th century, this has been the site for the manufacture of the internationally lauded Herend porcelain. When the company displayed its wares at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London’s Crystal Palace, Queen Victoria was so impressed that she commissioned a dinner service. Today 250 potters and 630 painters continue to craft every piece by hand. You can watch them at work, take a turn around the manufactory’s museum and purchase a classy gift for a loved one – or a memento for yourself!
